Introduction

25 Aug

To be brutally honest, sports and I have always gone together about as well as peanut butter and broken glass.

It’s not that I hate sports necessarily. I was a cheerleader in high school, and to this day I would fight to the death to defend it as a sport. I largely rejected sports because they consumed my high school environment and as a drama geek first and foremost, it was upsetting to see the drama program dissolve while new uniforms were purchased for junior varsity football. Or excellent teachers being let go so a position would be open for a new basketball coach.

So what the heck am I doing writing a blog even mentioning sports, you may ask? (Though you understandably may have used a stronger expletive than “heck.”)

Well, while I do not regret ignoring most of the high school sporting world, I now realize that, like it or not, sports are a huge part of our culture. Ignoring sports has left a sizable hole in my knowledge of the world around me.

To remedy this situation, I’m trying to blend what I know with new facts. As a woman, and a participant in humanities courses and a diversity dialogue leader, equality, or at the very least fairness, in the workplace is of great concern to me. Believe it or not, athlete is a job title, and it should not be exempt from civil rights. Nor should recreational sports.

The purpose of this blog is to raise awareness about the inequalities between men and women in athletics. With this awareness, I hope contribute to the discussion of gender discrimination. I am always open to suggestions for topics on gender. Or sports, though I remain a novice on the topic.

The goal for myself in this is to learn more about sports by mating the subject with one that I am more passionate to discuss. In the meantime, bear with me. Sports and I may be peanut butter and jelly yet.
